In March of 2015, Windy City Playhouse officially opened with its inaugural production, END DAYS, by Deborah Zoe Laufer, directed by Henry Godinez. The remainder of the premiere season focused on highly accessible works of art, helmed by some of Chicago’s most acclaimed directors, including Chuck Smith, William Brown, and Jessica Thebus. This first season saw three Jeff-recommended productions, growth of a subscriber base, and critical notoriety.
In 2016, the second season began with the audience hit, THE EXPLORERS CLUB, which also garned the Playhouse its first Joseph Jefferson Awards nomination, for Jeremy Floyd’s costume design. The third, 2017 season began with the off-Broadway critical darling, BOOTYCANDY, written & directed by Robert O’Hara.
Looking forward, the Playhouse staff, Board of Directors, and key stakeholders aim to build upon the success of its initial season, grow its audience base to reach even more nontraditional theater-goers, and lean into artistic experimentation.
